Much has been written and recorded about the United Indian Traders Association organization that was established on September 13,1931.

Unfortunately, a fire destroyed all of the then existing records of this "Guild" that was headquartered in Gallup and so a lot of the historical record have been lost. The goal of the UITA was to have a small number of reputable dealers band together for the purpose of promoting the quality and authenticity of Native American arts and crafts. The most famous trader C. Wallace was a director and various high level US Government officials were also participants in its formation.

Harold Ickes later became the Secretary of the Interior. Most experts agree that "UITA 21" was one of the more (or most) famous of the participating locations and was located at Santa Fe Square in Gallup, New Mexico and run by Julius Gans for a number of years. It is believed that a large number of very famous and influential smiths worked there. Mark Chee, Joe Quintana, Ambrose and Sam Roanhorse, and Frank Patania are said to have some affiliation. There are a number of ongoing efforts to research the history and document what can be learned about the history of the UITA.

Over the decades it evolved into more of an honorary social club for its former active members. In any event, UITA 21 pieces are quite special and have been for many decades. This charming Extra Large Concho Belt is in a rare and remarkable like-new condition!
